Designer dogs: Prettier Terrier Chihuahua

Apparently Chi Chi is a three-way cross: part Scottish Terrier, part West Highland and part Chihuahua. While Scottie News acknowledges that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, we think he’s way more of a looker than our last Scottie/Chihuahua cross. On top of that, his owner says he’s self cleaning, a mega-bonus if ever there were one. If designer dogs can self clean, bring ’em on and then we’ll transplant the gene back into boring old purebreds.

  1. I don’t get it. All this cross breeding on purpose. We called these dogs mutts when I was younger, not that they weren’t great dogs. We grew up with one. But now breeders are setting out to cross breed and make unusually looking dogs. What gives?

  2. The designer dog trend is just another “fad” that will hopefully go away quickly. Scottish Terrier breeders have worked diligently for years to try to minimize the affects of genetic diseases by finding “markers” for the passing of health problems to the breed. Now the “designers” are undoing all that we’ve worked so hard to do. Aside from that, they are also messing with the temperment of the dogs in question. Who knows if this new “mix” will have a stable temperment…at least we can pretty much determine the mental picture of the responsibly bred Scottish Terrier of today if they have been bred by a reputable breeder and not a puppy miller or a back yard breeder.

Only irresponsible breeders who do not truly care for the breed are indulging in this mass marketing fiasco. The old adage is indeed true–follow the money!
