The AKC is asking readers to vote on which breed of dog Barack Obama should get for his daughters. The hypoallergenic candidates are:
- Bichon Frise
- Chinese Crested
- Miniature Schnauzer
- Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
The Scottie News voted for the Bichon Frise with the poodle as second choice. We think a Bichon would be a good girl dog and the breed could use some good PR, given that its last turn in the political spotlight was with Eliot Spitzer.
Should John McCain win, there are also questions about who would take over the first dog role. McCain has two Yorkies — Lucy and Desi — as well as an English Springer Spaniel named Sam and a mutt called Coco. That’s quite a gang to take to the White House so he might have to pick and choose.
Readers, please tell the Scottie News, your choices for first dog(s) once the Scottish Terriers, Barney and Miss Beazley, head back to Texas.
Update: The Terrierman, a major Obama booster, has a riveting rant on the AKC’s dog vote. He makes the point that there’s no such thing as hypoallergenic dog. “There are some dogs that shed a little less than others,” he writes, “but in that bailiwick you would have to include just about all of the terriers that actually have to be stripped (i.e. the true terriers), including such great dogs as…”
Yes, the Scottish Terrier is on Terrierman’s list but, given its ties to the Bush administration, the Scottie News editorial board seriously doubts the Obamas would ever opt for a Scot.
Whatever they do eventually decide, Terrierman is urging them away from all the AKC choices:
Instead of offering up sensible choices, they laughably offer up a bunch of exotic mutants and dogs-that-only-a-hair-dresser-could-love, such as the Bichon Frise, the Chinese Crested, the Poodle, the Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier (a dog that sheds and does not have a true terrier coat) and the Miniature Schnauzer (which is not a terrier at all, no matter what the AKC says).
There’s nothing like a guy who tells you what he really thinks.
