Wanted: San Francisco Scottish Terrier puppies

an ee cummings fan writes:

dear bridgett, goodmorning . our family wants a puppy. we live in san francisco. now that the san francisco chronicle has no classifieds, its not so simple to find a litter of pups. perhaps you with your involvment with this breed could steer us in the right direction. thankyou, respectfully yours, mo

I feel your pain. Confusion and bad dog sites are why I started the Scottie News. Have you tried the US Scottish Terrier breeder page? What about Scottie Friends and the San Francisco Bay Scottish Terrier Club? Meanwhile, maybe one of our very knowledgeable readers will chime in. I know we have a few in the Bay Area.

  1. Right said. mo, you should be very careful if you want to buy a puppy through the classifieds anyway. Some of the rescues (try Petfinder.com) get young dogs for no other reason than their people just didn't have the time for them! Good luck but choose carefully. You are bound to get lots of good advice here, I'm sure.

  2. I would also recommend looking at a rescue. I got my Mollie from North Texas Scottie Rescue. I had looked at breeders and thought I wanted a puppy, but puppy found a home the day before we visited, so we met Mollie. They estimated her age 2-3 (she was left behind when the family moved). She has been all the energy and goofiness of a young scottie but without the frustration of teething and potty training. Plus, she was socialized, spayed, microchipped and came with a clean bill of health. I paid a fraction of what I would have had I got her from a good breeder and had all of those things done later. This is my second "rescue" scottie – I think I will always have a scottie and most likely she will be a rescue.

  3. Rescue is so important but I would be wary if you have very young children. It's much easier for a puppy to grow up surrounded by young children than to introduce an older dog to them.

  4. Why don't you get a rescued Scotty?Got to Petfinder or STCA.com (Scottish Terrier Club of America) to find a rescue group in your area.San Francisco has a wonderful Scotty Club. You can find them at STCA.

I found my current Scotty on Petfinder 3 1/2 yrs. ago @ the pound.Depsite the fact he had chemicial burns on his back & scar marks on his head,he has been my sweetest, most loving Scotty ever!

  5. Can I just say, I'm a bit surprised you all find rescue Scotties so easy to come from. In my neck of the woods, you can wait for years.

On the other hand there's a Scottie that lives on our street that the family got at the pound when he was one year old.

  6. As a member of the San Francisco Bay Scottish Terrier Club, I can very comfortably say that you'd be in good hands with any of the breeder/members of our club. In fact, I got my handsome wheaten Scottie from a wonderful breeder in our club. We also have a fantastic rescue program should you not want to wait on a list for a breeding, or if a young puppy is not for you. Check out our website for more info: http://www.sfbstc.org
