Scottish Terriers in the headlines.

Vancouver Scottish Terrier and her brave guardian attacked by crazed raccoon

Racoon attacks Scottie dog - Vancouver SunUgh! Toronto is full of raccoons and I hate them. Thankfully, though, I have yet to see one go on the attack. It tends to be Bridget who goes crazy whenever she spots a raccoon.

Vancouver officials do seem to be awfully lackadaisical about this. People who feed wildlife are dangerous and should be fined and stopped.

If you’re interested in this subject, I highly recommend this article from the New York Times magazines on pigeon feeders.

The Des Moines Register reports:

Waukee Police Officers Derrick Spoerry and Bill Daggett carried a woman out of her house just as smoke turned to flames on Tuesday morning.

An hour later, firefighters brought out Maddie, the family’s black Scottish terrier, to join her.

There are several more photos of Maddie’s rescue in the newspaper’s photo gallery, including a shot of the Scottie receiving oxygen.

German politician had brush with law over biting Scottie

The Scottish Terrier and Dog News missed this story when it first surfaced late last year. German justice minister Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger’s Scottie Franzi landed her in trouble with the law when he bit a passerby, who tried to pet him while he was out on a dog walk.

My German’s a bit rusty, but as far as I can tell, the victim filed an official complaint, before things ended up being settled out of court.

According to Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, Franzi, who occasionally accompanies his mistress minister to the national capital Berlin on business, is a loving and harmless dog and the incident in question was just an unfortunate accident.

Apparently the biting was a one-time lapse on the part of Franzi, who often attends meetings with his minister mistress

Scottish Terriers in the news as of late

In Washington State, firefighters rescue Maggie the Scottie after she fell down a cliff and got stuck in a blackberry bush on a rock ledge 70 feet above the water. According to the report in the Islands Sounder, responders used well-practiced rope rescue operations.

Does that mean they hooked Maggie up with a rope and pulled her out of the bush? It’s hard to believe they lowered her in the other direction, but what do I know? Maybe some informed readers can enlighten the Scottie News.

Scottish Terrier Dougie's skin condition
Dougie is receiving treatment and recovering well

Meanwhile in Edinburgh, a Scottie with a skin condition is rescued from the streets and the Scottish SPCA is appealing for information about the dog now known as Dougie.

In Grimsby, England, a handsome Scottish Terrier known as Bomber survived a house fire thanks to his neighbours.

From the archives of the Scottish Terrier and Dog News, here are more Scotties, who’ve made headlines.
