If you thought finding the right blow dryer for you was hard, just wait until you start shopping for a pet clipper. Grooming your own dog – whether it’s a miniature poodle or giant Black Russian Terrier – is a tricky task. You need to find a tool that’s right for both you and your pooch. That means figuring out the correct size, blade and motor. As a dog lover, I want to find the best option for my pet so I conducted extensive research, which eventually led me to the Oster A5 Turbo 2-Speed Professional Animal Clipper.

Although there are lots of cheaper clippers out there, cutting costs can  backfire. Clippers under $100 often break or become very dull after only a few uses. Also, cheap clippers are a lot like bad irons and vacuum cleaners — they take a lot more effort and time to get the job done. I like to think of good appliances — including clippers — as an investment. When you consider that the average grooming job costs $50 (not including tip or tax), the Oster A5 Turbo 2-Speed Professional Animal Clipper more than pays for itself after only three trims.

Start your engines: the Oster motor

Great clippers require a great motor and the Oster A5 Turbo 2-Speed Professional Animal Clipper
has it. A clipper’s motor drives its blade, ensuring a better cut. This clipper uses a 45-watt turbo powered rotary motor. Don’t let the sound of that scare you. The motor is quiet and won’t cause dogs to get anxious. The rotary motor is more powerful than magnetic or pivot motors and is ideal for bulk hair removal. It does, however, have a downside in that the motor is powered through a cord, which may become inconvenient for very large dogs or for extended periods of grooming. Still, at two pounds, the clipper is  lightweight and easy to maneuver even with its cord.

Cutting edge: the Oster blade

The clipper includes an Oster 78919-046 CryogenX Professional Animal Clipper Blade, Size 10, frozen to -300F during manufacturing. This process creates a hard, dense metal ensuring a sharper and longer-lasting blade so you’re not constantly replacing it. This specialized blade makes cutting hair easy for the dog and the groomer. It’s designed to glide through thick, coarse hair and not tug, no matter what the length.

Every blade is treated with AgION microbial protector, using silver to prevent growth of bacteria, mildew and mold. Providing further reassurance is the fact that more Oster blades have been sold to pet professionals than any other brand.

Different strokes…

This dual speed clipper reaches 4,000 strokes per minute on the high setting and 2,000 strokes per minute on the low setting. This feature allows you to make the right choice depending on your pet’s hair’s length. If you own a terrier with shorter hair, use the low speed but if you need an extra something for your German Shepherd’s thick undercoat, the high speed is a lifesaver. Many users also switch to the lower speed for areas like the face or the feet. Using the high speed also creates heat. While many users have never noticed it, others feel it after about fifteen minutes, which can be uncomfortable for the groomer and the pet, should the clipper come into direct contact with the skin. Users have found it helpful to start trimming their pet’s head and then move down to less sensitive areas. Another customer suggests applying “Kool lube” to blades or placing the blade on a cool metal surface and alternating with a different blade.

Which breeds does the Oster A5 Turbo 2-Speed Professional Animal Clipper work best on?

This clipper works well for lots of breeds. Owners of Cocker Spaniels and English Springer Spaniels with woolly coats love it. The clipper also works well on large dogs with thick coats like German Shepherds, Australian Shepherds, St. Bernards, Border Collies and Great Pyrenees. Customers have also had success using the Oster A5 Turbo 2-Speed Professional Animal Clipper on smaller breeds such as Shih Tzus, Pomeranians, Malteses and Pekingeses. And apparently, its works wonders on poodle sand various sized schnauzers — miniature, standard and giant — proving that size does not interfere with performance.

Although one user was happy with the results on his Mastiff, he suggested using a different sized blade than the #10. The Oster A5 Turbo 2-Speed Professional Animal Clipper can accommodate any A5 blade (sized 3 to 50). With A5 blades, the lower the number, the more hair it cuts. A number 10 blade cuts t0 1/16″ or 1.6 mm. The detachable blades are easy to change.

Finally, the Oster A5 Turbo 2-Speed Professional Animal Clipper need not be reserved for the family dog(s). While we don’t recommend you use it on humans, it is also great for long-haired cats like Persians, Himalayans and Maine Coons, and for farm animals such as horses and hairy angora goats.

What are others saying about the Oster A5 Turbo 2-Speed Professional Animal Clipper?

Although its 4 star review on Amazon speaks for itself, we thought you’d like to hear some of the great things users have to say about this clipper:

  • “These clippers cut through my dog’s super thick fur like it was butter. With my old cheapie clippers it took several hours. These clippers took less than an hour.”
  • “I have purchased 6 different clippers over the last 8 years. This is my second set of Osters and I will never buy anything else again.”
  • “I have tried three previous clipper sets ($30-80) and they were totally worthless. These clippers cut right through matting and knots and leave a nice smooth short-hair finish.”
  • “I have tried several different clippers. NONE could cut through my German Shepherd extremely dense undercoat, until these!”
  • “Don’t mess around with the light weight ones purchased at your local discount stores. This item works just like the ones at the groomers.”
  • My dogs look almost exactly like they do when I pick them up from the groomer. I honestly don’t know why on Earth I didn’t invest on clippers like these before. I kick myself in the rear every time I think about all the money I could have saved…
  • “I have 2 dogs and this paid for itself within first 2 uses. Easy to use. Convenient and well worth the cost!”
  • “I recently bought these clippers from Amazon. They work great. I have an English Springer Spaniel which has quite thick hair. These clippers plowed right through his hair without slowing down.”

      1. I foster for several different Rescue groups and have my own grooming set-up. I’ve groomed Cockers, Cairns (primarily hand-stripping), Scotties, Kerry Blue Terriers, Westies…and DID find the Turbo overheated too quickly so waiting for it to cool down is not acceptable. I have two A-5s and two other clippers as well. Much prefer the A-5! But…choosing a clipper that fits one’s needs is a personal choice.

  1. I have a A5 model that my mother used for dog grooming I was trying to find out how much it would be worth, it runs great. But it’s a older model I dont know if the serial # will help 107202 b, I also have many different blades for it , about how much would the blades be worth ?
