Unless you’ve been living out in the woods without a smart phone, you know that this week marks the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination.

In commemoration, the Scottie News is highlighting Jackie Kennedy’s Scottish Terrier connection. The photo above has never before been published on the Scottish Terrier and Dog News, but other portraits of young Jackie and Hoochie have. Click here to see our Kennedy archives.

Found: Photo of Jackie Kennedy and Scottie Dog

Many thanks to the reader who sent us a copy of this photo of Jacqueline Kennedy with her Scottish Terrier, Hootchie. While the Scottie News had reported on Hootchie before, we’d never actually seen photographic evidence of his existence.

If you click on this link, you can see clearly that it is indeed Jackie. And of course, today is the 40th anniversary of her brother-in-law Robert Kennedy’s murder so it gives us an excuse to run a Kennedy item. (Not that we actually ever need an excuse to run a Kennedy item)

Magnum Photo’s description notes:

This snapshot was taken by an itinerant photographer when Jacqueline BOUVIER was being taken for an afternoon outing in Central Park in NYC, by her maternal grandmother Mrs James LEE. Her Scotty dog was named “Hootchie” and when she was 2 years old Jackie “showed him” at the East Hampton Long Island Dog Show. Jackie drew her first complimentary press notices for her showmanship skill “Little two year old Jacqueline BOUVIER toddled to the show platform and exhibited with great pride a wee Scotch terrier about her own size”… it was claimed in the press.

Woman walks Scottie, comments on Kennedys

The Cape Cod Times reports:

There was very little activity visible outside the Kennedy compound yesterday except for a few television news satellite trucks and paparazzi parked half a block away. A woman walking a Scottish terrier on nearby Scudder Avenue declined to identify herself, but said residents of the area were concerned for their neighbor.”The Kennedys are good neighbors. It’s the news media and tour buses who stir things up here,” she said.

What can we say? It’s a slow news day, and as, the Scottie News, has reported before, dogs and Kennedys attract readers.

Dogs change world, perform Heimlich maneuver

Dog historian, psychologist and Canadian Stanley Coren names 10 dogs that played key historical roles. Number four is the terrier — Welsh not Scottish — who comforted President Kennedy during the Cuban missile crisis.

Meanwhile just yesterday, the ASPCA honoured dogs who had saved their owners’ lives. According to the New York Times,a 2-year-old golden retriever named Toby, performed a modified Heimlich maneuver on his owner, Debbie Parkhurst of North East, Md., when she choked on a piece of apple. Toby pushed her to the floor and jumped up and down on Ms. Parkhurst’s chest until he dislodged the piece of apple.”

Oh yes, a cat was honoured too. Just goes to show…

Dogs, sex and Kennedys

The Scottish Terrier and Dog News team was trained by a man whose motto was: “If it’s got dogs, sex or Kennedys, consider putting it on the front page.”

Well, this story has two of the three — dogs and Kennedys — so it’s definitely a headline maker at the Scottie News where our mentor is regularly proved right by the number of hits we get looking to find out if the rumours about Jackie Kennedy owning a Scottie dog are true.

Yes they are. According to the JFK Presidential Library, Jackie’s first pet was a Scottish Terrier named Hootchie. Scottie News has yet to find any photos of Jackie and her first dog so we’ll settle for Jacqueline Kennedy with her first husband on the cover of the current Vanity Fair.
